Never before has the change in seasons felt so prevalent. Blue skies abound, flowerbeds are abundant and blossom trees are in bloom — and the tantalizing thought of taking a trip abroad is seemingly ever more real. As we ease into this new season, having spent much of our time indoors, the trips outside and the garments we choose to clothe ourselves with take on a particular role — now more than ever, we want our clothes to feel comforting and easy.
As we switch up our spring wardrobes to wearing lightweight, relaxed pieces — think laid-back linen shirts or soft garment-dyed T-shirts with lightweight jackets, and more casual trousers — footwear too, is a necessary summer update.
Here at Trunk, as we look forward to the return of some normalcy, this season’s low-key, slip-on footwear has found new purpose in our everyday wardrobes. Soft yet durable, simple yet smart, these shoes will see you through the next few months and beyond.
The suede espadrille
At one time strictly reserved for the beach (and usually bought there), espadrilles have found new life inland thanks to practical updates such as durable rubber soles and calf leather linings. This version, from the family-run shoemaker Castañer, has been rendered in a soft and supple suede. The result is a more elegant and refined take, and one that can be worn confidently in the city with a shirt and smart trousers.
The white sneaker
Whilst most trainer styles are perennial, we think the classic all-white sneaker is best saved for spring and summer. The Achilles Low from Common Projects needs little introduction, famed for its minimalist design and versatility, it's the go-to sneaker for many. If you're looking to switch things up, then why not try the Racquet from Swedish brand CQP? A sleek update on a vintage tennis shoe, it's a slightly sportier alternative but equally versatile.
The penny loafer
Praised for its smart-come-casual look and easy-wearing appeal, the Alden unlined penny loafer is revered by many to be the king of summer footwear. Extraordinarily comfortable and best when beaten up a little, the 6243F model in snuff suede continues to be one of our best-selling products. We recommend wearing them with white trousers or olive chinos.
The suede sneaker
Mistakenly believed to be high maintenance, suede sneakers are far more durable than their canvas and synthetic counterparts and require much less maintenance. Our spring-summer collection from CQP comes in an array of dusty summer hues to compliment seasonal shorts, trousers, and even the hairiest of legs, from sage green and dark beige to a wonderful sky blue colour.
The iconic sandal
From dad sandal to fashion mainstay, the ascension of Birkenstock shows little sign of slowing. By far their most popular style, the iconic Arizona model is easily identifiable by its double straps, cork footbed, and durable rubber sole. Designed and developed with orthopedics in mind, there is no surprise that it's a comfortable choice for everyday wear. As for where it can be worn? We'll leave that one up to you...
