Our Must-Have Summer Shirt Edit

25 May 2021

There’s nothing more liberating in menswear than wearing a summer shirt, especially when it’s spaciously cut and from a fabric that’s woven to perform in hot weather. This is because the right summer shirt, whether it’s smart, smart casual or casual, flicks on the relax switch and transports you to warmer climes, even for a brief moment. Not many garments have that God-summoning power to conjure up such escapist sensations, and therefore it’s worth having a few of them in your wardrobe. Call it a shirting fix – you need them, and they need you.

Thankfully, this summer at Trunk, we have a number of shirts that tick all the right boxes in an array of fabrics – from breezy linens to silky cottons – and different styles to suit all kinds of tastes and scenarios. You can find all of them in our Summer Shop alongside other must-have pieces for any getaway you have on the cards this season.

Here are some of our favourites.

Finamore Majorca Linen Stripe Luigi Popover Shirt: Dark Blue

Even if you’re nowhere near the sea, a striped shirt with a nautical feel is a must-have for the summer season. It’s classically chic and fail-proof and this season, we have a popover shirt from Finamore, which is a Naples-based shirtmaker, that’s pleasingly casual and is best worn untucked. Cut from a 100% linen fabric, it excels in warm weather due to the openness of the weave and the lightness of the fibers that allow air to pass through. It’s then been washed for a softer feel that will keep you reaching for it week after week.

Gitman Vintage Linen Camp Collar Shirt: Chambray

The American shirtmaker Gitman Vintage has long been one of our most popular shirting brands, which is why we’re thrilled to have collaborated with them this season to create this exclusive Chambray camp collar shirt. We like to think that it’s rather charming option for this season due to the fact that the fabric has been woven with dyed warp yarns and white weft yarns, and so through wear and washing, the colour fades which makes each one unique. In terms of the cut, it’s inspired by a vintage design in the brand’s archive and as it has long-sleeves, it can be worn beneath a jacket for a dressed-down, tailored look.

Trunk George Linen Shirt: Blue

This season, we’ve produced our popular George shirt in navy using special Italian linen that’s been laundered to ensure an immediate soft feeling from the first wear. Cut with a slightly roomy fit and tailored in our workshops in Portugal, it’s a workhorse of a shirt that requires little to no thought about wearing; you can easily dress it up for dinner, or simply wear it with a pair of swimming trunks by the pool, and it features a single breast pocket which is perfect for your sunglasses.

Fedeli Cotton Terry Polo: Biscuit

Roughly 100-years-ago, it was commonplace to see men sauntering around places like France’s Côte d'Azur wearing shirts cut from Terrycloth, for it discreetly absorbs sweat whilst also keeping you cool. The fabric is back in vogue after a prolonged hiatus and this season, our friends Fedeli have produced this slim-cut polo shirt in a biscuit tone (there’s also a light blue and navy blue option). Based in Monza, Italy, Fedeli is currently helmed by the fourth generation of the founding family and, over several decades, has garnered a reputation for producing excellent knitwear. This polo shirt is no exception and will add a new dimension to your summer wardrobe.

Manual Alphabet Overdye Typewriter Cloth Shirt: Yellow Beige

Made from a Japanese typewriter cloth, which is an incredibly lightweight cotton poplin, this shirt from Manual Alphabet improves with age as it softens with every wash. The faded yellow hue gives it enough certification to be a summer shirt, while the loose fit coupled with the soft collar gives it a relaxed edge. A fine alternative to a more formal dress shirt as it has a silky sheen, it can be worn beneath a jacket or by itself with a pair of shorts somewhere near water of the crystal clear variety.

Finamore Bart Superlight Cotton Short Sleeve Shirt: Dusty Pink

Due to Finamore being based in Naples, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of its creations are perfect for the summer season in terms of fabric, tone, and cut. The second feature in this edit is quite special, as it’s cut from featherlight cotton that has a silk-like handle and in a lovely muted shade of pink that packs a punch. Meanwhile, the softness of the collar, which has a Cuban feel to it, puts you in holiday mode in seconds.

Trunk Audley Oxford Shirt: Navy

A new development for us in the shirting department this season is the Audley shirt, cut from a navy Oxford cotton cloth. Like every shirt that’s cut from Oxford cloth, it will improve with every wear and wash which simply adds character. The deep navy makes it rather elegant, and therefore it will lend itself well to alfresco dinners, whether that’s at home or abroad. Finished with Mother-of-Pearl buttons, we’re certain that the Audley shirt will become a firm-favourite for all of our customers.

Camoshita Cotton Linen Ramie Striped Jersey Polo: Peach

The offering from Camoshita this season is quite special, as there are a healthy handful of excellent pieces that would all be a delight to wear throughout the summer. This peach polo shirt, however, is a standout. Made from cotton, linen, and ramie (which is also derived from a plant) blend fabric, which has a soft handle akin to terrycloth, it performs dutifully in the heat as it absorbs sweat while also keeping you cool. If you’re going on holiday, this shirt will put you in the mood straight away.

La Paz Mamede Band Collar Cotton Popover Shirt: Blue Stripe

Honing from Portugal, La Paz is known for its summer wares, with a mix of staples and pieces of intrigue. This popover shirt has what’s called a band collar (although some refer to it as a Grandad or Mandarin collar), which is significantly more relaxed than your average style, and therefore should be worn when relaxing by the pool or beach. It’s cut from 100% cotton and features a finely embroidered blue stripe for some further nautical touches.
