It is rare that a brand name becomes universally synonymous with a certain item. However, when it does happen, it is always a signifier of absolute quality. Mackintosh is such a brand, the ‘mac’ or ‘mackintosh’ long having been a term for a raincoat of any brand, not just those produced by Mackintosh themselves. But these are the original, from the Scottish manufacturer which dates back to 1823, named for the chemist Charles Macintosh, who pioneered the development of formal waterproof fabrics. Having been supplied to the British Army during World War I and II, Mackintosh more than proved its ability to produce garments which can withstand more or less any weather conditions.
