Algha Works is a manufacturer of traditional handmade rolled gold eyewear, based in East London, England. The company was established in 1932, when the entire contents of an optical factory were purchased and transported from Rathenau, Germany – then a major centre for optics in Europe. The company remains in family ownership to this day, and continues to operate from its 1930s factory, using artisanal production methods largely unchanged for over a century. Rolled gold, rarely seen today, is a traditional material for wire framed eyewear, comprised of an outer coating of 24k Gold or Rhodium, with a thicker layer of 14k gold wrapped around a flexible nickel core.
